5 Key Factors that Led to Transformation and Personal Growth. You can apply them too!

It’s hard to believe that I recently celebrated my five year anniversary since moving to Austin, Texas.  The city where the music is always playing, the place that has changed it all.

How do I begin to share what this journey has meant to me? I hope I can put it into words that when you follow your heart and take a risk into the unknown you will never come out on the other side the same.  You will break, you may even be in denial at first, and step by step you will learn, grow, gain resilience and become unstoppable because you know who you are and the grit it took to get you there.

As I reflect back on my journey over the past 5 years. I’m able to recognize the lessons that life had in store for me.  Here are the 5 Key Factors that have led me to transformational and personal growth:

Buckle Up Because Once You Make a Decision There Is No Turning Back. I’ll never forget waking up in the shear panic of not knowing anyone in Austin and having an empty calendar.  “What have I done and is it too late to go back?” The answer was yes. Ironically, I didn’t hit the ground running when I first moved to Austin. This scared me and I prayed every night that I’d get the inspiration to hustle again for my business but my focus was meant to be elsewhere. It was meant to be on myself, digging deep, looking within and becoming the person that I’ve always dreamt of becoming. Each day I started my morning walking on Town Lake Trail repeating to myself… “one foot in front of the next… one step at a time.” As long as I was putting one foot in front of the other I knew I was moving forward.

The Healing Power Of Music. It didn’t take long before my soul was captivated by the music culture in Austin.  I wrote about it in previous blogs.  I took two step lessons and sure enough I was I out twirling to the sounds of live music night after night, learning so much about myself and becoming a part of a community in the process. A community that I love.

I also started taking guitar lessons.  Private lessons with my instructor Keith at BLK Vinyl and eventually I joined Girl Guitar Austin which offers a 6-week session followed by a performance showcase.  A performance showcase? As in I have to get on stage to sing and strum the song that I learned? That sounds dreadful but I did it anyway.  My goal was to feel the fear and allow myself to do it anyway. Sure enough I completed 3 showcases and I’m about to start my next session in a few days.

I learned that you are never too young or too old to try anything and in trying new things you are creating growth and change within yourself.  If learning to play a musical instrument is something that you have always wanted to do, I truly encourage you to go for it!

Write Every Single Day! Writing has changed my life and it will change yours too. My journal sits on my nightstand and without hesitation it’s the first thing I reach for in the morning and before I go to bed at night. Writing has created a tremendous amount of awareness for me.  I often tell myself that the greatest advice lies within in the previous pages of my own journal.  You have to trust yourself.

I truly encourage to you to give this a try. Write every single day about what you’re grateful for, write about your days – what would make your day great and what you did to execute on those desires.  At the end of the day, write about what you accomplished and how you could have made your day better.  We can all learn so much about ourselves through our writing.

The Five Minute Journal has changed my life and it will change your life for the better too!  If you are close to me, I’ve probably gifted you one; hoping that you find as much joy in writing as I do.

Explore, try new things, and don’t take life so serious!  When I moved to Austin I turned off the auto-pilot mode.  I was on a mission to discover what made me feel alive. I experimented with all things and I picked up some hobbies along the way.  I learned to rock climb, a sport that requires a tremendous amount of safety, awareness, overcoming fear and persistence. I’ll never forget being outdoors at Reimer’s Ranch and getting to the top of the cliff and looking back in disbelief reflecting on my life.  “Look at what you have created for yourself  by taking a leap into the unknown.”  In fact there isn’t a day that passes where I don’t reflect on these thoughts with intense gratitude for the scary choices that have led me here.

I also joined Austin Sports and Social and every Sunday evening I play flag football, a homage to my high school days! I learned hunter jumper riding and competed in my first show. A reminder to everyone that age knows no limits and it’s never too late to start.

Meditation + Yoga–  Are you aware of the psychological and physical benefits of yoga? I was not. I stumbled upon Sukha Yoga and attended a Sunday night Restorative Yoga Class led by an incredible teacher, Liz. I received more than I could have ever imagined.  As I continued my practice it became an ongoing opportunity to really look within and know myself, to learn how to be honest with myself and to truly feel.  If you would have asked me 5 or 6 years ago to attend restorative yoga or meditation class, I would have laughed and said, “That’s not my thing.” Yoga and meditation have been a driving factor in my growth, my energy and overall success.

This practice is available to all of us and I challenge you to give it a try if you are looking to evolve and grow.  Even if you have preconceived notions, try it! I promise you won’t regret it.

“Yoga is not a work-out, it is a work-in. And this is the point of the spiritual practice, to make us teachable, to open up our hearts and focus our awareness so that we can know what we already know and be who we already are.” – Rolfe Gates

Trust in Timing of Your Life-  One of the greatest lessons that I learned in the past five years is that there is a season for all things and you cannot force anything if the timing is not right. Trust in your journey!

Earlier I wrote that I prayed and prayed for the inspiration to hustle in my business like I had in the past but my focus was meant to be on myself.  It was March 2017, three years after I moved to Austin. I left my house to run an errand and I saw a large sign while driving on South Lamar Blvd. advertising promotional products.  I pulled into an empty parking lot and stared intently, as if there was a light was shining down on the sign! Suddenly, I envisioned the sign saying “ATX Promos.” I went home right away to see if the domain name was available and just like that, I expanded my business and ATX Promos was born — that inspiration that I prayed for arrived and I was ready but more importantly the timing was right.

This move was scary but it has changed my life for the better in every way imaginable.  It has forced me to be brave and make a lot of hard decisions with no one to turn to but myself.  My number one priority has always remained to ensure Maggie, Cody and Jack have the best life ever and we lived the greatest adventure full of love.  In fact, two of the hardest moments of my life was saying “goodbye” and “until we meet again” to two of my fur-babies.

The result of pushing through so many obstacles is that I learned the value of resilience, and inner work.  Just as equally important, I have learned to recognize and celebrate my wins and there have been so many.  Would I do it again? My answer is “YES!”  It was worth it!

The goal in sharing my story is to inspire and encourage you to go for it and chase your dreams. My hope is that you find strength in the same things that gave me strength.  Slow down and discover your inspirations that lead you to transformational growth if that is what you are seeking. If I can do it, you can do it and trust me it is so worth it!

I leave you with a quote by one of my favorite authors:

“Belonging so fully to yourself that you’re willing to stand alone is a wilderness– an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching.  It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. The wilderness can often feel unholy because we can’t control it, or what people think about our choice of whether to venture into that vastness or onto. But it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it’s the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand” – Brené Brown
